EMAP Assistance Can Greatly Reduce Regulatory Compliance Costs for Small Businesses
According to a recent study, small firms pay 364 percent more to comply with environmental regulations than large firms. In his September 2005 study, The Impact of Regulatory Costs on Small Firms, W. Mark Crain of Lafayette College found that the cost of regulatory compliance is disproportionately higher for small businesses compared with larger companies. On average, compliance with environmental regulations costs firms with less than 20 employees $3,296 per employee. This is significantly higher than the per employee cost for firms with 20 – 499 employees ($1,040) and the per employee cost for firms with over 500 employees ($710). With the decks stacked against them, small businesses need extra help. Reducing regulatory compliance costs is something EMAP can help with. Through one-on-one consulting, including visits to businesses to review operations, EMAP environmental consultants have successfully helped over 1,200 small businesses in Pennsylvania review their compliance with environmental regulations in a cost effective manner.
