Local Pharmacy Reduces Energy Consumption

Jason Kramer has been proactive in looking for ways to conserve energy and prevent wasteful consumption even before he opened the doors to the Mifflinburg Pharmacy in the summer of 2008. Jason previously purchased a nonoperational gas station in January 2008 and began remodeling the 2,500 square foot building for his business pre-venture.

In January 2008, Jason Kramer contacted the Bucknell University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP) to provide him with an energy audit of the recently purchased building he planned to renovate into a pharmacy. Additionally, EMAP informed Jason about the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Small Business Advantage Grant (SBAG) to help him fund his energy efficiency project. Soon after consultation, Jason applied for and received a DEP Small Business Advantage Grant (SBDC). With the help of the grant, Mifflinburg Pharmacy purchased and installed an Energy Star® rated Trane 5-ton split system central air conditioner with a SEER rating of 17.5 and a Trane direct vent gas furnace with an AFUE rating of 95.6. The Energy Star® rated heat pump is being used in conjunction with an Energy Star® rated programmable thermostat. Shortly after installing the Energy Star® rated heat pump Mifflinburg Pharmacy opened their doors to the surrounding community. By installing the Energy Star® rated heat pump Mifflinburg Pharmacy reduced energy costs with an annual savings of $725/3,625 kWh and $462/282 therms. These upgrades allowed Mifflinburg Pharmacy to reduce air emissions by 4.3 tons annually!

Jason has received one DEP Small Business Advantage Grant (SBAG) to help him with his energy saving plans and to help him grow his business. This is a continuing success story with the dedication of Jason and his desire to grow his business and benefit the environment at the same time.
